Disaster in Zogirma: Over 200 Families Displaced as Flood Ravages Kebbi Community

A torrential downpour has devastated Zogirma village in Bunza Local Government Area of Kebbi State, displacing over 200 households and leaving scores of families homeless.

The flash flood, which followed heavy rainfall, submerged homes, destroyed farmlands, food stores, and personal property. Eyewitnesses described the rainfall as one of the most intense in recent memory, forcing residents to flee with little more than the clothes on their backs.

In the aftermath of the disaster, Governor Nasir Idris visited the affected community on Thursday to commiserate with the victims. He announced an immediate ₦50 million relief fund to cushion the impact and pledged a swift government response to restore normalcy.

“The government is fully committed to ensuring that normalcy returns to this community,” the governor assured, standing among displaced families and ruined homes.

During the visit, Governor Idris also approved the renovation of the District Head’s palace and announced the upgrade of the Government Day Secondary School in Zogirma into a full-fledged boarding facility, signaling a long-term commitment to infrastructural development in the area. An additional ₦10 million was donated to support the palace restoration.

District Head, Alhaji Mohammed Jambo Tele, thanked the governor for the timely intervention, describing the visit as “a strong demonstration of commitment to the welfare of our people.”

Chairman of Bunza Local Government Area, Zayyanu Shehu Bunza, commended the governor’s rapid response, noting that the relief initiative would bring much-needed hope to affected families.

Meanwhile, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Chairman, Bello Yakubu, disclosed that emergency relief items were already being distributed. These include 100 bags each of rice, sorghum, and millet, along with tomatoes and other essential food supplies.

Governor Idris expressed gratitude for the community’s continued support for his administration, reiterating his commitment to good governance and sustainable development across Kebbi State.

As Zogirma begins the long journey to recovery, state authorities say they remain on high alert to prevent future disasters and provide support to vulnerable communities across the state.
