Army Reaffirms Unwavering Commitment to National Security and Democracy

Abuja, Nigeria — As Nigeria continues to confront a range of internal security challenges, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has reiterated the Nigerian Army’s firm dedication to protecting the lives of citizens and safeguarding the country’s democratic values.

Speaking during a press briefing on Wednesday at the Army Headquarters in Abuja to kick off the 2025 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL), Oluyede, represented by the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Major General Gold Chibuisi, emphasized that the military remains resolute in its constitutional mandate to protect the nation from enemies of peace and stability.

“In recent times, our nation has had to contend with enemies of peace and agents of chaos who have brought terrorism to our borders and created internal security challenges. The Nigerian Army has risen to the occasion to deny these terrorists the opportunity to disrupt our socio-cultural heritage or violate the sanctity of our sovereignty,” he said.

He noted that the Army continues to play a critical role in supporting civil authorities, enforcing law and order, and defending the democratic process.

“The Nigerian Army will not relent in its efforts to ensure the security of the Nigerian people and the perpetuity of our democracy,” Oluyede declared.

Soldier-Centric Reforms and Operational Efficiency

The Army Chief also unveiled a renewed transformation agenda focused on improving the welfare, training, and professional development of Army personnel. According to him, these reforms are designed to enhance the operational effectiveness of the Army and prepare it for emerging security threats.

“This year’s theme underscores our commitment to placing the soldier first as we drive toward institutional transformation. Through innovation, research, and improved civil-military relations, we are better equipping our troops to fulfil their constitutional responsibilities,” he stated.

Oluyede lauded the Army’s historical contributions to national and global security, from its participation in World Wars I and II, the Nigerian Civil War, various regional peacekeeping missions, and ongoing counter-terrorism operations across the country.

“As we mark 162 years of unbroken service, we honour the sacrifices of our officers and men, past and present. From the Glover Hausas to today’s modern fighting force, the Nigerian Army has remained a pillar of national stability,” he said.

NADCEL 2025: Celebrating Service and Sacrifice

Outlining the activities planned for NADCEL 2025, Oluyede mentioned various civil-military projects across Kaduna State, free medical outreach programs, charity initiatives, school engagements, and a special lecture at the Nigerian Defence Academy.

The celebration will culminate in a grand military parade and awards ceremony on July 6, bringing together top military brass, policymakers, and citizens to commemorate the Army’s enduring legacy of service.
