The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has extended an open invitation to anyone who wishes to visit him at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja.
This development follows a landmark ruling by the Kenyan High Court, which on June 24 declared Kanu’s extraordinary rendition from Kenya to Nigeria in 2021 as unlawful and illegal.
Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, revealed the invitation on Friday after a routine meeting with the separatist leader. In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Ejimakor wrote:
“Rising from today’s visitation, MAZI NNAMDI KANU took the opportunity to hail his lawyers & siblings for the stunning victory from Kenya.
He also extended an open invitation to anybody (who is in doubt about his messages through his lawyers) to personally pay him a visit at the DSS.”
Kanu was rearrested and brought back to Nigeria in June 2021 under circumstances that have since drawn international scrutiny. The Kenyan court’s recent judgment appears to validate longstanding claims by Kanu’s legal team that his arrest and extradition violated international law.
The IPOB leader’s gesture is seen by observers as a move to foster transparency and reaffirm the authenticity of his public messages, often relayed through his lawyers.
As of now, Nigerian authorities have yet to respond to either the Kenyan court ruling or Kanu’s open invitation.
