INEC Begins Processing Registration of ADA, 109 Other New Political Parties

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday announced it has commenced the process of registering the All Democratic Alliance (ADA) and 109 other political associations seeking recognition as political parties.

This development comes less than 24 hours after the electoral body stated that ADA — a new platform formed by a coalition of opposition figures — had not yet met the requirements for registration.

In a statement issued by the Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, INEC confirmed that ADA is among 110 associations whose requests are under review.

“As at Monday, 23rd June 2025, the Commission has received letters of intent from 110 associations that wish to register as political parties,” the statement read. “We are diligently processing the requests in line with the procedure outlined in the law as well as our Regulations and Guidelines.”

Prof. Yakubu further disclosed that all applications submitted so far — except for six that were received recently — have been acknowledged. He assured that the remaining acknowledgements would be completed before the end of the week.

The Commission also reminded stakeholders and interested groups that the Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties 2022 handbook is available for download on the INEC website.

INEC’s latest move signals a potential expansion of Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the next electoral cycle, with growing interest from emerging political movements.
