NAF Launches Investigation into Death of Detained Air Force Corporal

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed the death of one of its personnel, Corporal A. S. Wulumba, who was serving under its Bauchi Command, and has subsequently launched an investigation into the incident.

According to preliminary accounts, Corporal Wulumba was reportedly detained in a guardroom for allegedly reporting late to duty and later died while still in confinement.

Detention Raises Questions

Speaking to Hobnob News, the late corporal’s sister, Numdarai Wulumba, expressed heartbreak and concern over the handling of the case. She said her brother had informed her on May 4, 2025, that he was being detained for lateness, which stemmed from a health issue.

“He explained to his commanding officer that he wasn’t feeling well, but his explanation was ignored,” she stated. “Military rules stipulate that detention for minor infractions like lateness should not exceed 24 hours. He should have been court-martialled if necessary — not kept indefinitely. Now, he’s gone.”

Official Response from NAF

In response, the NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, issued a formal statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss.

“The NAF deeply regrets to confirm the unfortunate passing of Corporal A. S. Wulumba. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time,” Ejodame said.

He further confirmed that a board of inquiry has been constituted to determine the exact circumstances leading to the corporal’s death.

“The loss of any of our personnel is profoundly felt across the Service,” he added. “As part of our standard procedure, we have convened a board of inquiry to ensure a full and transparent investigation. Further details will be made available as the inquiry progresses.”

Upholding Integrity

The incident has sparked public concern over personnel welfare, disciplinary procedures, and internal accountability within the armed forces. The NAF reiterated its commitment to transparency, justice, and the well-being of its service members, assuring that the outcome of the investigation will guide further action.
