Barrister Jesutega Onokpasa, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political and legal circles and a staunch supporter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has passed away at the age of 49.
News of his death broke on Tuesday through political associates and party loyalists on social media. Okezie Atani, a known APC supporter, confirmed the development via X (formerly Twitter), writing, “We lost Barr. Jesutega Onokpasa — may his soul rest in perfect peace.”
Onokpasa, a lawyer by profession, played a notable role in the APC’s Publicity Committee and was a member of the party’s Presidential Campaign Council during the 2023 elections. He was widely recognised for his passionate political commentary and frequent appearances on national television where he defended the policies of President Bola Tinubu and the APC.
In a statement, the UK chapter of the Renewed Hope support group described his passing as “a significant loss to the Nigerian political and legal communities,” commending his unwavering commitment to public discourse and national development.
Despite being a vocal advocate of the APC, Onokpasa had earlier this year expressed public disappointment over growing insecurity and economic hardship under the Tinubu administration, declaring his unwillingness to support a 2027 re-election bid.
He is survived by his wife and children. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
