Disaster Averted: 45,000-Litre Petrol Tanker Crashes in Oyo Without Fire Outbreak

Ogbomoso, Oyo State — A major disaster was narrowly avoided on Friday when a petrol tanker carrying 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) crashed in the Ayanyan area along the Ogbomoso/Ilorin Expressway. The tanker, registered MAG 20 XB (Borno), reportedly lost control and veered into a nearby pit, raising fears of a devastating fire.

Confirming the incident on Saturday, Maroof Akinwande, Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, explained that the agency received a distress call around 12:30 p.m. The fire service team, led by PFS11 Oluwaleye, responded promptly to the scene.

“Upon arrival, we found the petrol-laden tanker overturned, posing an immediate fire risk,” Akinwande said. “We quickly deployed foam chemical compounds to carpet the fuel spillage and neutralize any potential ignition sources to prevent a fire outbreak.”

Thanks to the swift and coordinated response, no lives were lost, and properties valued at millions of naira were safeguarded. The fire service was supported on-site by CFS Awoyemi Seyi, the police, and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), who managed security and traffic control.

The Oyo State Fire Service commended the teamwork that averted what could have been a catastrophic event, reminding the public of the ongoing need for caution and safety on major transport routes.
