A suspected suicide bomber died in an explosion near the Mogadishu Cantonment in Abuja on Monday, 26 May 2025, while two civilians sustained injuries. The blast occurred at a bus stop directly opposite the military barracks, sparking concern and swift response from security agencies.
The incident took place around 2:34 PM. According to the Nigerian Army, the suspect arrived at the location in a commercial vehicle and was seen behaving suspiciously after disembarking near a checkpoint. When military police personnel approached him for questioning, he moved a short distance away and the improvised explosive device (IED) he was carrying detonated. The explosion killed him instantly and injured two bystanders.
The Nigerian Army, along with operatives from the police, Department of State Services (DSS), and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), arrived at the scene promptly. The injured victims were rushed to the Defence Medical Centre for treatment. An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from the Nigeria Police sealed off the area for further investigation.
Confirming the blast via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Nigerian Army posted:
“Explosion at bus stop opposite Mogadishu Cantonment Abuja. Situation under control. Details later.”
Security officials are working to determine whether the bomber acted alone or was part of a broader network. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The Army has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or items to security personnel.
The blast highlights ongoing threats to public safety in Nigeria’s capital, even near highly secured military zones. Authorities say the incident underscores the importance of cooperation between citizens and security forces to prevent further attacks.
As investigations continue, the Army has assured that more details will be released in due course.
