Northern CAN Expresses Cautious Optimism Over Zamfara Government’s Clarification on Alleged Sharia Court Arraignment

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), in the 19 Northern States and Abuja, has expressed cautious optimism following the Zamfara State Government’s denial of reports that Miss Zainab Muhamadu was arraigned before a Sharia Court for allegedly converting to Christianity.

In a joint statement released on Thursday by CAN’s Northern Chairman, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, and Secretary-General, Bishop Mohammed Naga, the association acknowledged the Zamfara government’s official clarification and pledged to give the administration the benefit of the doubt while maintaining vigilant oversight of the situation.

“While this clarification puts the matter to rest for now, we remain ready to act should verified facts suggest otherwise,” the statement read.

The faith body welcomed the state’s swift denial of any such legal proceedings, but underscored the importance of transparency, accountability, and prompt action should credible evidence emerge in the future.

“To Christians in the North and across Nigeria, we assure you that CAN remains steadfast in uncovering the truth wherever it is hidden,” the leaders affirmed. “We will not relent in our efforts to expose and bring an end to all forms of religious persecution and harassment in the region.”

CAN also commended the collaborative efforts of security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and youth groups in Zamfara for helping to de-escalate tensions and foster peace in the wake of the controversy.

The association urged Christians to remain calm, law-abiding, and prayerful, while reiterating its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the religious freedom of all Nigerians, regardless of creed.

Northern CAN further called on other northern state governments to strengthen collaboration with faith-based organizations in order to build mutual trust and prevent the spread of misinformation that could endanger the country’s fragile unity.

“Working together is essential to building a society where no Nigerian is persecuted for their faith,” the statement concluded.
