Ebonyi Governor Raises New Medical Doctors’ Salary from N150,000 to N500,000

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has announced a N500,000 salary increase for newly hired medical doctors working in all primary healthcare facilities across the state.

Speaking at the flag-off of health activation, which also marked the launch of the drug revolving fund and distribution of medical equipment to general hospitals, Nwifuru revealed that the government has invested over N10 billion to upgrade health facilities, equipment, and manpower.

Highlighting efforts to address human resource shortages, the governor stated that 195 healthcare professionals—including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and laboratory scientists—have been recruited and assigned to general hospitals to improve service delivery.

“This event is more than a ceremony; it signals our administration’s dedication to revitalising Ebonyi’s healthcare system and fulfilling the health commitments in our People’s Charter of Needs.

“For too long, our health sector has suffered from inadequate funding, personnel shortages, and insufficient equipment. This must change now.

“With the launch of the Drug Revolving Fund, we are ensuring a steady supply of essential medicines in all general hospitals. The fund’s revolving model guarantees sustainability, transparency, and accountability.

“This initiative will especially benefit our rural communities by providing quality medicines at affordable prices. We have already achieved over 60% coverage of essential drugs, with ongoing efforts to reach full delivery.

“I call on healthcare workers and facility managers to maintain the highest standards of integrity and professionalism in managing these resources.

“In terms of equipment, our hospitals require proper tools to function effectively. To this end, we are distributing modern medical equipment—such as hospital beds, mattresses, patient monitors, drip stands, and other vital consumables.

“These items are essential life-saving tools, not mere decorations. This investment, exceeding one billion naira, represents a major step forward in repositioning Ebonyi’s health sector. We are also collaborating with institutions to train and retrain our health workforce to meet global standards.

“I urge community leaders, traditional rulers, and civil society to help monitor and safeguard these investments. Health facilities belong to the people, and ownership brings responsibility. Accountability is mandatory, not optional.

“Any mismanagement or diversion of public funds will be met with firm consequences, as recent actions in the sector demonstrate.

“Our vision includes establishing specialist hospitals in the three senatorial zones to provide advanced healthcare services, reduce medical tourism, and save lives. We are also pursuing partnerships to improve healthcare financing and implement digital health systems to enhance efficiency and access.

“Today marks a new beginning for health in Ebonyi. Let this flag-off be a call to action for health workers, communities, and all stakeholders. Together, we will build a system that delivers hope, healing, and quality healthcare for all,” Governor Nwifuru concluded.
