UK Halts Foreign Recruitment for Care Jobs in Sweeping Immigration Overhaul

In a landmark shift, the United Kingdom has officially ended overseas recruitment for social care roles, unveiling a sweeping immigration reform aimed at curbing low-skilled migration and restoring public trust in the system.

According to Hobnob News, the announcement came via an 82-page Immigration White Paper released on Monday, titled “Restoring Control over the Immigration System.” The document outlines a bold restructuring of immigration policy, declaring that “skilled must mean skilled.”

The UK Home Office confirmed: “We will close social care visas to new overseas applications,” citing misuse of the route and its failure to foster sustainable workforce growth. The change takes immediate effect, with current foreign care workers in the UK permitted to renew or switch visas only until 2028, pending a domestic workforce development plan.

The reform redefines skilled work within the UK’s points-based immigration system. Salary, qualification, and English proficiency requirements will now rise across most entry routes. “Work that does not meet the bar will not be eligible for a visa, no matter the sector,” the paper stated firmly.

Additionally, the controversial Immigration Salary List — which previously allowed hiring below the general wage threshold — will be scrapped. “We will remove the list to prevent wage undercutting and protect UK workers,” the Home Office noted.

Employers are now expected to prove genuine domestic recruitment efforts before turning to international hires. “We’re shifting the burden back onto employers to invest in local talent,” the document emphasized.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper described the policy overhaul as a “bold, necessary reset.” She stressed the need to reduce net migration — which reportedly quadrupled from 2019 to 2023 — and to “end the perception that immigration is a substitute for skills planning.”

The White Paper signals a clear message: temporary migration routes must not evolve into permanent pathways. The UK government is committed to restoring the integrity of its immigration system — ensuring it works for Britain, not against it.
