A 16-year-old student, Olamide Aderibigbe, has achieved an impressive score of 98 in Mathematics in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). Aderibigbe, who attends Starville International School in Jabi, Abuja, also secured 86 in Physics, 68 in English, and 84 in Economics.
Professor Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), shared insights into the 2025 UTME statistics during a press briefing. According to him, of the more than 1.9 million candidates who sat for the exam, 12,414 scored 300 marks or above, while only 4,756 scored 320 and above. This reflects a slight improvement compared to 2024, when just 8,000 candidates—about 0.5 per cent of the total—scored above 300.
The 2025 UTME results were officially released on Friday, with figures showing that over 1.5 million candidates scored below 200, which is considered the benchmark for an average performance. The UTME is graded over a total of 400 marks and assesses candidates in four major subjects. While English is compulsory, students are required to select three additional subjects relevant to their chosen field of study.
Commenting on the results, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, stated that the performance outcomes show the government’s progress in reducing examination malpractice and promoting academic integrity.
In an interview with our correspondent on Saturday, Olamide’s father, Mr. Niran Aderibigbe, expressed his gratitude to God for his son’s outstanding performance. He added that Olamide aspires to study Architecture, with Covenant University and the University of Ibadan among his preferred institutions.
The family remains hopeful as they await the next phase of the university admission process.
