Communities in Zamfara State following reports that suspected armed bandits have imposed a N60 million levy on the villages, accusing them of collaborating with the Nigerian military during recent operations in the area.
The development was disclosed on Monday by a security analyst, Bakatsine, through a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle.
According to Bakatsine, the affected communities are Koloma, Dan Hayin Zargado, Zargado, Dan Godabe, Sabuwar Tunga, Makini, Bubaka, Yelwa, Bahwada, Koda, Manya, and Kabusu. All are located within Maru and Maradun Local Government Areas of the state.
“Bandits have imposed a N60m levy on 12 Zamfara communities… for allegedly aiding military raids. Residents fear attacks if they don’t pay,” the analyst wrote.
The residents are reportedly living in fear as the bandits have threatened fresh attacks if their monetary demands are not met. The ultimatum has heightened anxiety in the region, with many villagers uncertain about their safety.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Zamfara State Government nor security authorities have issued an official statement regarding the situation.
Zamfara has remained one of Nigeria’s most volatile states in recent years, plagued by recurring banditry, kidnappings, and rural violence. The latest development adds to growing concerns over the safety of civilians and the apparent boldness of non-state actors in challenging state authority.
Security experts have called for urgent intervention to prevent further bloodshed and ensure the protection of innocent residents in the region.
