Hundreds of residents in Hotoron Arewa, a suburb on the outskirts of Kano, have been flocking to a muddy water site believed to hold spiritual significance. Locals claim the water emerged from the “footsteps of Prophet Muhammad” said to be visibly inscribed on the ground. This belief has turned the area into a pilgrimage site, attracting people from nearby communities and distant towns.
Many of those visiting the site are battling unexplained illnesses and hope the water offers divine healing. In a video circulating online, men, women, and children are seen scrambling to access the muddy pool. Some scoop the water into bottles, others drink it directly using their hands, while many pour it over their heads in ritualistic baths.
“People with strange illnesses are also trooping to the site to bathe in the water,” a local resident said on condition of anonymity. “Villagers are coming from all over, either to drink the water, collect it in plastic bottles, or bathe in it. They believe it heals.” The area has now taken on a spiritual atmosphere, with people praying and applying the muddy water to their bodies in reverence.
