A devastating tragedy occurred at the University of Ilesa on Friday evening when 100-level student Gbolahan Ojo was electrocuted while using his phone, which was plugged into an electric circuit. The incident took place during a thunderstorm, which struck while Ojo was playing a game on his phone in his hostel near the Prototype Engineering Development Institute (PEDI) junction in Ilesa. The young student was rushed to the hospital but was later declared dead.
The university’s management expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as both tragic and unfortunate. According to the statement issued by the institution’s registrar, Funso Ojo, the electrocution was caused by lightning that accompanied the evening’s downpour.
“The student was a first-year Business Administration major,” the statement noted, confirming that his body was taken to Wesley Guild Hospital after the police visited the scene. The police have launched a full investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy.
In a show of solidarity, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Taiwo Asaolu, and other university officials, including the Dean of Student Affairs, the Head of the Department of Business Administration, and the Area Commander of Police, gathered to console the deceased’s father upon his arrival in Ilesa.
The University of Ilesa has assured the family of Gbolahan Ojo of continued support during this difficult time, with efforts to assist them in any way possible. The entire university community mourns the loss, offering prayers for the repose of his soul and sending condolences to his family, friends, and fellow student.
