Two Killed in Niger State Rockslide at Illegal Mining Site

Tragedy struck in the early hours of Sunday when a rockslide at an unauthorised mining site in Farin-Doki, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, claimed the lives of two men.

The Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident in a statement released late Monday, revealing that the victims were natives of Kano State who had reportedly ventured into the site under the cover of darkness.

“We received information that a mining site in the remote Farin-Doki area had collapsed,” the statement read. “Officers from the Erena Division, with the support of local residents, responded swiftly and launched a rescue operation.”

Despite efforts to reach the trapped individuals, both men were recovered lifeless from beneath the rubble. Their bodies were later transported to a hospital in Zumba for official documentation and procedures.

Preliminary police investigations suggest the victims were engaged in illegal mining activities at the time of the collapse.

“It was during these unauthorised operations that the rockslide tragically occurred,” Abiodun stated.

The police command has since launched a full investigation into the incident and emphasized its ongoing efforts to curb illegal mining operations across the state. Authorities have repeatedly warned of the dangers posed by such unregulated activities, citing both safety and environmental concerns.

Illegal mining, particularly in remote and poorly monitored locations, has become an increasing concern in Niger State, often leading to fatal incidents and undermining state security.

“The command remains committed to ensuring public safety and combating all forms of illegal mining activities within the state,” Abiodun affirmed.

As investigations continue, the state government and law enforcement agencies are under renewed pressure to intensify regulation and enforcement efforts to prevent further loss of life.
