Plateau Governor Convenes Emergency Security Meeting as Death Toll from Bassa Attacks Rises to 51

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State on Monday convened an expanded State Security Council meeting in response to the horrific attacks on Zikke and Kimakpa communities in Bassa Local Government Area, which have left at least 51 people dead and several homes destroyed.

The high-level meeting, held at the Council Chamber of the Government House in Jos, was called to address the worsening security situation in the state. Discussions focused on the disturbing resurgence of violent attacks, particularly in Bassa and Bokkos Local Government Areas, and on implementing decisive measures to restore peace and prevent further bloodshed.

Governor Mutfwang confirmed that over 100 armed militiamen invaded the affected communities in the early hours of Monday, launching an unprovoked attack on unsuspecting residents.

“We are on top of the situation and will go to any length to forestall a recurrence,” the governor assured citizens, adding that more information surrounding the incident would be made public in a statewide broadcast on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.

According to Wakili Tongwe, a leader from the Kwall community, the attackers stormed the villages around dawn and opened fire on residents, who were trying to flee after hearing gunshots. Tongwe explained that he, along with local vigilantes and security personnel, was patrolling a nearby community when the attack began.

Although the joint security team responded and engaged the attackers, the loss of life had already occurred. Tongwe stated that 36 people were killed on the spot, while four others later succumbed to injuries. Several others who sustained gunshot wounds are currently receiving treatment in various hospitals.

As the state mourns yet another devastating incident, Governor Mutfwang reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening security, supporting victims, and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
