The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has exposed a disturbing academic fraud involving 585 fake A-Level certificates in 2025 alone, with four suspects already in police custody.
This revelation was made by the JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, during a virtual closed-door meeting held with staff on April 2, 2025, as part of preparations for the 2025 Mock-UTME and UTME examinations. Details of the meeting were published in the JAMB Weekly Bulletin, obtained by Hobnob News on Monday.
Professor Oloyede expressed deep concern over the alarming rate at which fake Advanced Level results are being used to gain admission into tertiary institutions. He emphasized that the growing prevalence of forged credentials prompted the establishment of the Nigeria Integrated Post-Secondary Education Data System (NIPSED) to effectively manage and authenticate data across post-secondary institutions in the country.
Particularly troubling, according to the Registrar, was the upload of 13 fraudulent IJMB results by some accredited Professional Registration Centres. These cases are currently under investigation, and four suspects have been apprehended by the police. The arrested individuals are cooperating with law enforcement in efforts to identify and dismantle the broader network behind the certificate-forging syndicates.
He further revealed that investigations point to possible collusion from insiders within academic institutions who aid and abet these fraudulent activities.
In addition to the certificate forgery crisis, Professor Oloyede also disclosed reports of extortion of candidates by some Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres, demanding payment for services that are supposed to be free. He condemned such unethical practices, calling them detrimental to the credibility of the board and the entire educational system.
He urged JAMB staff to uphold integrity and remain committed to the board’s mission of ensuring fairness, transparency, and merit in Nigeria’s admission process.
