CNG Issues Stern Warning to Benue Government Over Alarming Killings, Kidnappings in Otukpo, Gwer West

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), Benue State Chapter, has issued a stern warning to the Benue State Government over the alarming surge in killings and kidnappings plaguing Otukpo, Gwer West, and other communities across the state.

In a strongly worded statement released on Sunday, the group, through its State Coordinator, Daniel Okwa, expressed grave concern over what it described as the government’s inadequate response to the growing wave of violence. The group called on Governor Hyacinth Alia to take urgent and decisive action to prioritize the safety and well-being of the state’s citizens before the situation spirals out of control.

“The persistent attacks on innocent citizens have created a climate of fear and insecurity, and your administration’s inadequate response has exacerbated the crisis,” the statement read.

CNG highlighted that the incessant violence has not only crippled local economies but also displaced thousands of families, especially in the Idoma and Tiv communities, who continue to suffer from relentless bloodshed. The group also condemned the silence of political leaders and security agencies, describing it as “unacceptable and dangerous.”

According to the group, the security situation in areas like Otukpo and Gwer West demands an immediate and comprehensive response. “We therefore demand an immediate deployment of security personnel and equipment to affected areas to deter further attacks,” Okwa stated, urging the government to collaborate with security agencies, civil society, and neighboring states to curb the violence.

The call comes on the heels of several recent attacks. In the Olena area of Asa community, residents fled their homes after a string of deadly assaults by suspected herdsmen, resulting in multiple deaths, including that of a retired immigration officer.

Tragedy also struck on April 3 when gunmen hijacked a Benue Links bus in Ikobi, Otukpo LGA. The attackers killed the driver and abducted all passengers on board. The incident triggered widespread outrage and protests by youths demanding immediate government intervention.

“Incessant killings and kidnappings in Otukpo and other parts of Benue have brought the communities to a standstill,” CNG noted, calling on the Alia administration to step up its responsibilities.

As fear and tension mount, CNG reaffirmed its commitment to supporting any genuine effort by the government to restore peace and protect the lives and property of Benue residents.
