The Sokoto State Government has raised concerns over the use of dangerous traditional methods in treating cases of metal poisoning, calling for an immediate end to the practice.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Wurno, condemned the common but harmful practice of making incisions on patients’ stomachs as a supposed remedy. Speaking during the presentation of government-supplied drugs for metal poisoning treatment at General Hospital, Tureta, he urged affected individuals to seek proper medical care instead.
“The practice of making incisions on the stomach of patients suffering from metal poisoning must stop immediately. Instead, those showing symptoms should be rushed to hospitals for proper medical care,” Dr. Wurno stated.
Represented by the Executive Director of the State Hospital Services Management Board, Dr. Bello Attahiru, the commissioner reassured the public that the government was committed to tackling metal poisoning cases. He announced that essential drugs for treatment would be distributed to all general hospitals handling such cases across the state.
Receiving the medical supplies on behalf of the local government, the Chairman of Tureta Local Government Council, Alhaji Aliyu Tureta, expressed gratitude for the intervention. He described the provision of the drugs as timely and pledged that the medicines would be used effectively for the benefit of the affected communities.
The Sokoto State Government continues to urge residents to rely on modern medical solutions rather than harmful traditional treatments, emphasizing that professional healthcare remains the safest approach.
