Kogi Central Senator’s Recall Petition Fails to Meet Constitutional Requirement

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that the petition seeking the recall of the Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District has failed to meet the constitutional requirements as stipulated in Section 69(a) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

According to INEC the petition did not secure the necessary threshold of signatures required to proceed with the recall process. Section 69(a) mandates that a recall petition must be signed by more than half of the registered voters in the senatorial district before INEC can initiate further action.

INEC officials stated that after verification, the petition fell short of this requirement, effectively halting the recall process. The development comes after weeks of political tension in Kogi Central, with proponents of the recall accusing the senator of underperformance, while supporters defended their representative’s record.

Legal experts note that without the required voter support, the recall attempt cannot move forward. Meanwhile, the senator in question has expressed relief at the outcome, describing it as a reaffirmation of public confidence in their leadership.

As the situation unfolds, political analysts predict that this failed recall effort may have implications for the region’s political landscape ahead of future elections.
