The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised an alarm over the circulation of counterfeit Noristerat Injection 200mg in Nigeria. The agency disclosed that the fake contraceptive product has been found in Niger, Bauchi, and Kano States, particularly at the Coordinated Wholesale Centre in Kano.
In a statement released on Monday and posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, NAFDAC warned the public against the health risks associated with the counterfeit product, which was discovered to be mislabelled and repackaged from Chlorpheniramine and Dexamethasone injection ampoules.
“The counterfeit Noristerat Injection 200mg has been found in Kano, Bauchi, and Niger States. This poses a serious health risk as unsuspecting women may be using a product that offers no contraceptive protection,” the statement read.
Genuine Noristerat 200mg is a contraceptive injection designed to provide eight weeks of pregnancy prevention and is meant for short-term birth control. However, the fake version could fail to prevent pregnancy and expose users to other health complications.
NAFDAC confirmed that the counterfeiter responsible for the illegal repackaging has been tracked and arrested, assuring Nigerians that efforts are ongoing to remove the fake product from circulation.
“We have successfully tracked and arrested the counterfeiter behind this dangerous act. The agency remains committed to ensuring that only genuine and safe medical products are available to the public,” NAFDAC stated.
To help consumers and healthcare providers identify the counterfeit Noristerat Injection, NAFDAC provided the following details:
• Registration Number: 04-5715
• Manufacturing Date: September 2022
• Expiry Date: September 2027
• Lot Number: KT02TTK
NAFDAC has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected counterfeit products.
“We call on healthcare providers, pharmacists, and the general public to report any suspicious Noristerat Injection to NAFDAC. Your cooperation is vital in protecting public health,” the agency emphasized.
NAFDAC reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and assured Nigerians that stricter surveillance measures would be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.
For further information, the public is advised to visit NAFDAC’s official website or contact its offices nationwide.
