President Bola Tinubu’s administration has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the constitutional rights of all Nigerians, according to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris. This assurance comes as the Federal Government announces the release of over 4,082 inmates, which is expected to save more than N1 billion yearly and decongest correctional centres across the country.
The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed that President Tinubu has approved an increase in the feeding allowances of inmates. Additionally, the President has given the green light for the relocation of 29 correctional centres within residential areas due to urban development. Tunji-Ojo emphasized that a correctional centre should be located at least 100 metres away from residential buildings.
The interior minister also noted that over 3,000 buildings in more than 240 correctional centres are being renovated. Some of these buildings were constructed over 50 years ago, with one dating back to 1914.
Idris described President Tinubu as a true democrat who encourages constructive criticism and healthy opposition. The minister expressed appreciation to the media for their dedication in covering the Ministerial Media Briefing Series, which coincides with the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ (NUJ) 70th anniversary.
The administration has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding press freedom and creating a conducive environment for media practice in Nigeria. “This administration believes that a free and responsible press is essential for good governance, transparency, and national development,” Idris said.
