Olushola Oladoja, a postgraduate student from the University of Jos, has been elected as the new National President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). Oladoja secured a resounding victory with 300 votes, defeating his closest rivals Salauhudeen Suleiman from the University of Abuja and Gambo Abubakar from Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai.
The election, which took place at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja on Wednesday, was attended by over 358 student leaders, including Presidents of Students’ Union Governments from various tertiary institutions across the country. The event was hailed as a significant moment in student governance, drawing attention from both the academic and political spheres.
Comrade Suleiman Sariki, who chaired the NANS Convention Committee, oversaw the electoral process, which was widely described as transparent and credible. Delegates commended the organizers for ensuring a smooth and fair exercise, further solidifying trust in the NANS electoral system.
Related to the election, the atmosphere surrounding student issues remains dynamic, with various factions within the organization addressing concerns over perceived partiality in the recent distribution of CNG buses. Additionally, the NANS leadership has voiced their expectations for merit-based appointments in higher education institutions, particularly urging President Tinubu to appoint a qualified rector for Anambra Polytechnic. Students have also raised concerns about an N10,000 fine imposed by FCET following a violent protest, emphasizing the need for fairness and dialogue in student matters.
