The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has distanced itself from a congress organized by its South-South zonal executives in Calabar, Cross River State. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, stated that the gathering was not an official party event, contrary to claims by the organizers.
Ologunagba explained that the PDP had officially postponed the congress to allow for broader consultations. The party’s National Working Committee (NWC) had exercised its powers under the PDP’s constitution to postpone the congress, which was initially scheduled for Saturday, February 22, 2025.
However, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who attended the congress, described the South-South as the PDP’s strongest hold. He rejected the claims that the PDP’s constitution permits the postponement of a congress, arguing that no congress or convention has ever required the participation of every delegate.
Wike emphasized that the South-South Zone is the strongest zone of the PDP in Nigeria and that the congress held in Calabar was the final zonal congress of the South-South Zone. The PDP’s NWC has urged party members, stakeholders, and the general public to disregard any gathering or outcome of any such gathering in Calabar, Cross River State, purported to be the South-South Zonal Congress of the PDP.
