Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has requested that the Senate conduct its investigation into the alleged missing firearms behind closed doors for security reasons.
This request was made in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which was read during Thursday’s plenary session.
Mr. Egbetokun expressed appreciation for the Senate’s efforts to thoroughly investigate the issue. “We appreciate the Senate committee’s probe into the alleged missing firearms,” he said. “We urge the committee to conduct future hearings on sensitive security issues in camera so that wrong impression will not be created in the minds of Nigerians and the minds of the international community.”
He explained that closed-door sessions would help safeguard national security and curb the spread of misinformation.
“Conducting hearings on these sensitive security issues in camera will help prevent the spread of misinformation and protect national security interests,” he noted. “It will also allow for more candid discussions and fact-finding.”
Mr. Egbetokun reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating with the National Assembly to improve security and the well-being of Nigerians.
After reading the letter, Mr. Akpabio commented that the IGP’s request was clear. He added that while the police would conduct their internal investigation, the Senate would also carry out its own inquiry into the matter.
