Nigeria and Israel to Establish Joint Commission for Stronger Diplomatic and Economic Ties

Nigeria and Israel have expressed interest in forming a joint commission to enhance their diplomatic and economic relations. This collaboration will focus on key sectors, including security, agriculture, health, education, and entertainment.

The discussions took place during a high-level meeting between Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, and Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Michael Freeman, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Complex in Abuja.

Ambassador Ojukwu emphasized the importance of expanding trade and investment opportunities, noting that the current trade volume of $250 million between both countries does not reflect their full potential.

> “The $250 million trade volume between our nations is just a fraction of what we can achieve. We encourage more Nigerian investors to explore export opportunities to Israel,” she stated.

She also highlighted Israel’s expertise in security and counter-terrorism, stressing that Nigeria could benefit from such knowledge in combating insurgency and strengthening national security.

Ambassador Freeman reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to agricultural collaboration, particularly in modern farming techniques like drip irrigation.

> “With this technology, rice can be grown anywhere. We will demonstrate this next week by planting rice at our farm in the Israeli embassy,” he disclosed.

Discussions also covered potential collaborations in the entertainment sector, particularly Nollywood. While a film co-production agreement exists, Freeman revealed that it has been delayed due to bureaucratic hurdles in Nigeria.

Ambassador Ojukwu advocated for residency privileges for Nigerians who have lived in Israel for over five years without criminal records, citing Nigeria’s significant contribution to religious tourism in Israel.

Solidarity and Global Security

Addressing the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, Ambassador Ojukwu expressed condolences to Israel, calling it a tragic event. She hoped that ongoing ceasefire negotiations would lead to de-escalation and the release of hostages.

Freeman clarified Israel’s position on Gaza:

> “We left Gaza in 2005 and have no plans of remaining there. However, we cannot allow Hamas to continue controlling Gaza.”

The meeting concluded with both nations agreeing to fast-track agreements on technology transfer, education, health, and entertainment. The proposed joint commission will oversee these bilateral efforts moving forward.
