President Bola Tinubu has called on African leaders to abandon their reliance on foreign plans and instead develop homegrown solutions to address the continent’s challenges. Speaking at the Dr. Kayode Fayemi commemorative symposium and launch of the Amandla Institute for Policy and Leadership Advancement in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized the need for leaders who can wield policy as a surgical blade, rather than a slogan.
Tinubu lamented the “tragedy of our time,” where African leaders confine themselves to foreign blueprints and fail to emancipate themselves from client-state mentalities. He stressed that the continent needs leaders who can think critically and develop innovative solutions to its problems.
The President argued that Africa’s renaissance will not happen by chance, but rather through deliberate effort and strategic planning. He urged leaders to empower youth to innovate in tech hubs across the continent and to create ecosystems that support entrepreneurship and innovation.
Tinubu also emphasized the importance of African leaders taking ownership of their development agenda, rather than relying on foreign consultants and institutions. He called on the Amandla Institute to become a command center for the continent, turning thinkers into doers and policies into progress.
Former South African President Thabo Mbeki, who delivered a keynote address at the event, echoed Tinubu’s sentiments. He noted that Africa’s development aspirations have not been met due to inadequate resource mobilization and poor leadership. Mbeki emphasized the need for African leaders to prepare adequately to position the continent correctly in the global arena.
The event was attended by dignitaries, including the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, and former Nigerian Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon.
