A 200-level Mass Communication student at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Kwara State, has taken his own life due to overwhelming financial hardship. The student, whose identity has been withheld, consumed a poisonous substance at his residence in the Oke-odo area of Tanke, Ilorin, leaving the university community in shock and mourning.
According to sources, the deceased had been struggling with severe financial challenges since resuming his studies last year. The situation worsened after the loss of his father a few years ago, leaving his mother, a retired school teacher, as the sole provider for his academic needs.
Despite efforts by colleagues and friends to raise funds to cover his tuition fees and provide basic necessities, the financial burden became insurmountable. A poignant note left behind by the deceased revealed that he was unable to cope with his dire financial situation, citing it as the reason for his decision to end his life.
The incident occurred last weekend when the student’s roommate discovered his lifeless body. An investigation into the incident has been launched. The university community is in mourning, and the incident has raised concerns about the financial struggles faced by many students.
