A fire outbreak at an Islamiya school in Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State has resulted in the deaths of 17 Almajiri students, according to News360 Nigeria.
The fire, which began on the night of Tuesday, February 4, lasted for about three hours, killing the children and injuring approximately 16 others.
A local resident, Abdulrasaq Bello, explained that the fire originated from stored wooden sticks.
Bello stated, “It happened at Makaranta Mallam Ghali, inside their study hall. There are about 100 of them in the house, after they evacuated the students, they thought none of them remained inside the house, it was when they returned after the fire, they started seeing their legs, hands, they got burnt beyond recognition.”
A source confirmed that the 17 pupils were buried on Wednesday, February 5, following Islamic rites.
The chairman of Kaura-Namoda Local Government, Mannir Haidara, confirmed the incident, stating that he was en route to the site and would provide further details later.
