In a show of unity and solidarity, the Congress of Political Parties in Benue State has passed a vote of confidence on Senator Dr. George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). This decision was reached during a meeting held on February 3, 2025, in Makurdi, as part of the state’s 49th-anniversary celebrations.
The political parties acknowledged Senator Akume’s outstanding leadership and contributions to the progress of Benue State and Nigeria. They condemned attempts to undermine his integrity, describing them as “misguided and bound to fail”.
The parties urged state governments in the North Central region to collaborate with Senator Akume to deliver good governance. They emphasized the need for unity and cooperation among political parties and stakeholders in Benue and North Central Nigeria.
The resolution also condemned directives allegedly issued by local government chairmen and state appointees, restricting gatherings, political activities, and disrupting thanksgiving services in churches. These actions were deemed as violations of fundamental rights, stifling democracy, and undermining the rule of law.
The Congress of Political Parties commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Senator Akume to the high office and for allocating substantial financial resources to Benue State since June 2023. They urged Governor Hyacinth Alia to utilize these funds effectively to deliver tangible development.
The resolution was endorsed by leaders of various political parties, including the Zenith Labour Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance, National Rescue Movement, and the All Progressives Congress, among others.
This unified stance demonstrates the commitment of Benue State’s political parties to supporting Senator Akume and promoting good governance, democracy, and development in the state.
