The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is currently navigating a tense leadership crisis, with two individuals, Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye, claiming the position of National Secretary. The situation came to a head today as both men attended the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting in Abuja.
The meeting, which commenced at 12:05 p.m. with BoT Chairman Adolphus Wabara presiding, saw Anyanwu present from the start, while Ude-Okoye arrived five minutes later. The atmosphere quickly became tense, with the meeting entering a closed-door session shortly thereafter.
The leadership crisis stems from Anyanwu’s decision to contest the Imo State governorship election while still holding his party position. This led to the South East PDP zone nominating Ude-Okoye to replace Anyanwu as National Secretary. Although the Appeal Court in Enugu upheld Ude-Okoye’s appointment on December 20, 2024, a subsequent restraining order from the Court of Appeal in Abuja directed Anyanwu to remain National Secretary until the Supreme Court resolves the appeal.
As the PDP struggles to resolve this internal conflict, the party’s ability to present a united front ahead of future elections remains uncertain.
