Peter Obi: More ‘Yahoo Boys’ Exist in Government Than on the Streets

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 general elections, has made a bold claim about the state of governance in the country. Speaking during the 4th graduation ceremony of Nexford University on Saturday, Obi asserted that the prevalence of fraudulent individuals, often referred to as “Yahoo Boys,” is higher in government institutions than on the streets.

Describing Nigeria as a “crime scene,” Obi underscored the urgent need for competent and ethical leadership to address the nation’s systemic challenges. He encouraged the graduates to become agents of positive transformation in their communities, emphasizing the power of integrity and moral character in creating a better society.

Leadership and Accountability in Crisis

“When we talk about vices, don’t think it’s just the Yahoo Boys on the streets,” Obi remarked. “The truth is, there are more Yahoo people in government than outside it because we’ve turned the entire country into a crime scene, with people both inside and outside stealing.”

The former Anambra State governor called for a shift in societal values, stressing that meaningful change is not about rocket science but about cultivating strong character and resisting corruption. Obi challenged the graduates to utilize their newfound knowledge to make a difference in their communities.

“You’ve gained knowledge today,” he said. “Use it to help change society. You’re victims of a system where past generations failed to do what is right, and now you’re bearing the consequences. But you have the opportunity to set a new course.”

Oby Ezekwesili’s Call to Service

Joining Obi at the event, Oby Ezekwesili, a former Minister of Education and prominent advocate for good governance, also addressed the graduates. She emphasized the importance of service and leadership as key drivers of societal progress.

“Service is the highest form of leadership,” Ezekwesili said. “See this graduation as an opportunity to serve—whether in your workspaces or in the country at large. The world of work today is vastly different from what it used to be, and you must master it to thrive.”

Ezekwesili highlighted the need for adaptability in an ever-changing global workforce, urging the graduates to align their skills and passions with the pursuit of societal betterment.

A Nation in Need of Transformation

The statements from both Obi and Ezekwesili come at a time when Nigeria faces a myriad of challenges, including economic instability, corruption, and governance deficits. Their remarks resonate with many Nigerians who yearn for leaders who prioritize transparency, accountability, and the welfare of the citizenry.

The event concluded with a charge to the graduates to rise above the societal failings of previous generations and to serve as catalysts for a brighter future. With a blend of knowledge, character, and courage, Obi and Ezekwesili believe that young Nigerians have the potential to reshape the country’s narrative and restore its integrity.
