Supporters of the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, gathered at the Speaker’s Lodge in GRA Ikeja, Lagos, on Saturday morning, planning a “heroic welcome” for the embattled lawmaker. The supporters, clad in pro-Obasa vests and caps, converged on the lodge, sparking controversy over the choice of venue, given that Obasa is no longer officially entitled to the residence.
Obasa was impeached by a majority of lawmakers in the House and replaced by Mojisola Meranda, the former deputy speaker. The former Speaker was not in the country when he was impeached and has not been seen at the lodge as of the time of filing this report.
The gathering has raised eyebrows, with a resident expressing surprise that the lodge was opened for the supporters. Armed security personnel, including the police, are present in the area to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
This development comes amid reports that Obasa faces corruption charges and is being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of mishandling constituency intervention funds and projects.
