Immigration Crackdown Intensifies: ICE Agents Raid Newark Businesses, Detain Undocumented Migrants and Citizens

Newark, New Jersey – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents conducted raids on businesses in Newark on Thursday, detaining undocumented migrants and even U.S. citizens, including a military veteran. The operation has sparked outrage in the city, long known for its sanctuary policies, and has drawn sharp criticism from local officials.

The raid comes in the wake of President Donald Trump’s intensified crackdown on illegal immigration. Trump, who returned to the White House earlier this week, has issued a series of executive orders aimed at deporting millions of immigrants residing in the country without proper documentation. These measures also seek to penalize officials and cities that resist federal immigration enforcement efforts.

Violations and Concerns Over Rights

According to Newark’s mayor, Ras Baraka, ICE agents failed to present a warrant during the raid, which targeted a business establishment in the city. “Undocumented residents, as well as citizens, were detained during this operation,” Baraka stated. Among those detained was a U.S. military veteran who faced the indignity of having his military credentials questioned.

“This act is a blatant violation of citizens’ rights as enshrined in the U.S. Constitution,” Baraka emphasized in a strongly worded statement. “Newark will not remain silent while people are unlawfully terrorized.”

The mayor refrained from naming the business that was raided but described the incident as a direct attack on the city’s commitment to protecting immigrants and upholding their rights.

Sanctuary City Under Threat

Newark, the most populous city in New Jersey, has been a vocal supporter of sanctuary policies. In 2017, Baraka signed an executive order solidifying Newark’s status as a sanctuary city, emphasizing the city’s refusal to cooperate with federal immigration authorities on matters involving undocumented migrants without proper judicial warrants.

The latest raid marks one of the first significant actions taken in Newark since Trump’s renewed crackdown on immigration enforcement. Federal agents reportedly arrested nearly 500 undocumented migrants earlier this week in sanctuary cities, including individuals from New York and New Jersey.

Baraka’s criticism of the federal operation is consistent with his previous opposition to Trump’s immigration policies, which he described as targeting vulnerable communities.

Broader Implications of Sanctuary Policies

An estimated 11 million immigrants resided in the U.S. without legal status or under temporary protections as of 2022. Nearly 44% of this population lives in states with sanctuary laws limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Newark’s sanctuary policies are part of a broader movement to shield immigrants from aggressive federal enforcement, though such policies remain a contentious issue nationwide.

Reports indicate that ICE agents have been ramping up operations in sanctuary cities, with the recent arrests focusing on individuals wanted for outstanding criminal charges. Critics argue that such actions erode trust between local governments and immigrant communities while raising concerns over potential overreach and rights violations.

Newark’s Stance Moving Forward

Mayor Baraka has vowed to continue defending Newark’s immigrant community despite federal pressure. “We stand firm in our commitment to protect the rights of all our residents, regardless of immigration status,” Baraka said.
