The Chicago Police Department announced it will not cooperate with upcoming deportation actions ordered by President Donald Trump and United States Immigration authorities.
This statement, released on Monday, follows Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s reaffirmation of his commitment to resist Trump’s extensive reforms. Trump has pledged to enforce strict border security measures across the nation.
On his return to the White House on Monday, Trump issued an executive order to expedite the deportation of undocumented immigrants. However, Chicago authorities have vowed not to comply with these directives.
The Chicago Police Department clarified that it does not track individuals’ immigration status nor shares such information with federal agencies.
“To be clear, the Chicago Police Department will not assist or intervene in civil immigration enforcement in accordance with the City of Chicago Municipal Code,” the department emphasized in its statement.
The department further noted, “As always, we will continue to enforce the law if a crime occurs, regardless of the citizenship status of those involved.”
This declaration underscores Chicago’s stance as a sanctuary city, prioritizing local policies over federal immigration enforcement, and reaffirming its commitment to protect all residents, irrespective of their immigration status.
