WHO Expresses Regret Over US Withdrawal, Citing Decades of Global Health Cooperation

The World Health Organization (WHO) has voiced its disappointment over the United States’ decision to withdraw from the organization. In a statement released on Tuesday, WHO highlighted its crucial role in protecting global health and security, including that of American citizens.

WHO emphasized its efforts in addressing disease root causes, strengthening health systems, and managing health emergencies. The organization noted that the US was a founding member in 1948 and has played an active role in shaping WHO’s work alongside 193 other member states.

The statement read, “For over seven decades, WHO and the USA have saved countless lives and protected Americans and all people from health threats. Together, we ended smallpox, and together we have brought polio to the brink of eradication.”

WHO also acknowledged American institutions’ contributions to and benefits from membership. The organization expressed hope that the US would reconsider its decision and engage in constructive dialogue to maintain their partnership.

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the withdrawal, citing the need to “pause” funding and identify alternative partners to assume WHO’s activities. Trump had previously criticized WHO’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
