Oyo Kingmakers Reject Governor’s Appointment of New Alaafin

A controversy has erupted in Oyo State following the appointment of Prince Akeem Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo by Governor Seyi Makinde. Five prominent kingmakers in Oyo town have rejected Owoade’s appointment, alleging that it goes against their recommendation.

The kingmakers, including the Basorun of Oyo, High Chief Yusuf Akinade, and the Lagunna of Oyo, High Chief Wakeel Akindele, argue that Prince Lukman Gbadegesin is the rightful Alaafin-elect. They claim that Gbadegesin was appointed by a majority of lawful votes at a meeting held on September 30, 2022, in accordance with the Alaafin of Oyo Chieftaincy Declaration of 1961.

In a letter signed by their legal counsel, Kunle Sobaloju, SAN, the kingmakers described the governor’s actions as illegal and urged the suspension of the process until the matter is resolved in court. They contend that the Alaafin is not chosen by consultation or divination but through strict compliance with the Registered Alaafin of Oyo Chieftaincy Declaration of 1967, which governs the selection process.

Governor Makinde had announced Owoade’s appointment on Friday, stating that it was made after extensive consultations and traditional divinations by the Oyomesi, the Oyo kingmakers. However, the protesting kingmakers claim that no such meeting was convened, and the decision amounts to executive recklessness.
