2027 Elections: Speculation Grows Over Potential PDP Governors’ Defections to APC

ABUJA – Strong indications suggest that some governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) banner may defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections. Sources indicate that these potential defections stem from unresolved crises within the PDP, particularly at the National Working Committee (NWC), state, and zonal levels.

Reports reveal that certain PDP governors have recently initiated closer ties with President Bola Tinubu, either by visiting him in Lagos or inviting him to commission projects in their states. These interactions reportedly include ongoing discussions about the governors’ potential political alignments.

The Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, is reportedly playing a pivotal role in persuading these governors to join the APC, as part of efforts to strengthen the ruling party’s influence.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, who recently expressed support for President Tinubu’s administration, has fueled speculation about a possible defection. Represented by Commissioner for Information Ifeanyi Osuoza at the Delta State Communication Workshop in Asaba, Oborevwori emphasized the importance of aligning with the President’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.”

Similarly, President Tinubu has lauded Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah for his leadership and development strides, commending his efforts during a visit to Enugu where he commissioned several projects. Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang also visited President Tinubu during the holiday season, further fueling speculation about PDP governors aligning with the APC.

Delta PDP Leaders Demand Clarification

In Delta State, a group of concerned PDP leaders has called on Governor Oborevwori to address rumors of his alleged plans to defect to the APC. In an open letter signed by Theophilus Ekiyor, Ochuko Oghenekome, and Ezekiel Chukwudi, the group urged the governor to clarify his political intentions to reassure party members.

The letter stated, “We are deeply troubled by rumors of your alleged intention to cross over to the APC. Reports suggest you are engaging with key aides of President Bola Tinubu and other influential APC figures to facilitate this move. This development, if true, would have significant implications for the PDP in Delta State.”

The group further warned that delayed clarification could be interpreted as confirmation of the rumors, urging Governor Oborevwori to promptly address the concerns.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, these developments are expected to shape the political landscape, with alliances and defections likely to influence party dynamics at the state and national levels.
