ASABA – Tragedy struck in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, on Sunday following a petrol tanker explosion that left at least two people feared dead and significant property damage in its wake.
The State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident, stating that the inferno consumed two banks—First Bank and Access Bank—as well as four houses, including an Anglican Church and two vehicles.
Eyewitnesses reported that the tanker, laden with petrol, overturned while attempting to navigate a turn along the Old Asaba-Lagos Road, igniting a fire that engulfed the surrounding area.
“It was devastating,” a source at the scene remarked. “The tanker fell near the First Bank in Agbor during a turn, and the resulting fire destroyed everything in its path.”
Emergency services were reportedly slow to respond, as one witness noted, “The fire is still burning, and we are yet to see firefighters at the scene.”
Authorities have yet to confirm the exact number of casualties, and an investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage and the circumstances leading to the accident.
