In a surprising turn of events, a Zambian police officer reportedly under the influence of alcohol released 13 detainees on New Year’s Eve, prompting a manhunt for the escapees.
Inspector Titus Phiri allegedly took the cell keys from Constable Serah Banda at Leonard Cheelo Police Station in Lusaka. Among the released were suspects held for assault, robbery, and burglary, according to Hobnob News.
Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga recounted the incident: “In a state of intoxication, [Phiri] forcibly seized the cell keys… unlocked both the male and female cells, and instructed the suspects to leave, stating they were free to cross over into the new year.”
Of the 15 detainees in custody, 13 fled the station. Inspector Phiri, who initiated the release, has since disappeared and has not addressed the allegations.
This unusual incident drew comparisons to a 1997 episode involving the late High Court Judge Kabazo Chanda, who ordered the release of 53 detainees due to prolonged detentions without trial. “Justice delayed is justice denied,” Judge Chanda had declared.
Reacting to the recent event, lawyer and former presidential spokesperson Dickson Jere remarked on Facebook: “The scenario is almost comical – but it also brings to mind the systemic issues in our justice system, much like in 1997.”
