The family of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has accused President Bola Tinubu of failing to honor an alleged pre-election agreement to secure Kanu’s release.
In a statement, Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu, alleged that Seyi Tinubu, the President’s son, met with him in Abuja before the 2023 general elections. The meeting, reportedly approved by President Tinubu, centered on a pact ensuring that IPOB would not boycott the election in exchange for Kanu’s release if Tinubu became president.
“Seyi assured me that the meeting was sanctioned by his father and that any agreement reached would be binding,” Emmanuel Kanu stated. “In good faith, we agreed that IPOB would not interfere with the election process. Despite our cooperation, my brother remains in detention nearly two years later.”
Emmanuel Kanu expressed frustration that multiple court rulings in favor of his brother’s release, including those by the Appeal Court and Supreme Court, have been ignored. He criticized the government for relying on legal technicalities to stall proceedings, stating, “His detention lacks any legal basis, either in Nigeria or elsewhere in the world.”
Highlighting the family’s disappointment, he lamented, “It is deeply disheartening that those who claim to be honorable cannot keep their word.”
The claims have reignited concerns over the prolonged detention of Nnamdi Kanu despite judicial rulings in his favor.
