Over 3,000 Defectors Join APC in Abia as Deputy Speaker Kalu Welcomes New Members

In a significant political shift, over 3,000 individuals from Ukwa East and Ukwa West Local Government Areas of Abia State have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The mass defection occurred in Akwete, Ndoki, during an empowerment program organized by Hon. Chris Nkwonta, the representative for Ukwa East and Ukwa West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Addressing the energized crowd, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, expressed optimism about the APC’s growing influence in the region, hinting at more defections to come.

In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu described the wave of defections as a testament to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s dedication to the Southeast. He specifically commended the President for signing the South East Development Commission (SEDC) bill into law, which aims to address the region’s infrastructure deficits and foster sustainable development.

“The President has demonstrated a genuine commitment to Ndigbo through equity and fairness. By establishing the SEDC, he has taken a significant step toward rebuilding the damage caused by the civil war and ensuring long-term development in the Southeast,” Kalu said.

Kalu encouraged the new APC members to remain steadfast in their support, assuring them that the party is committed to their welfare and the development of their communities.

“For choosing to join the APC, it shall be well with you. The party is here to empower you so that you can uplift others,” he affirmed.

During the event, Kalu was conferred with the chieftaincy title of “Enyioha of Ukwa Kingdom,” further solidifying his influence in the region. He urged continued support for President Tinubu’s administration, promising that Ukwa East, Ukwa West, and the entire Southeast would benefit significantly from the dividends of democracy.

Among the notable defectors was Hon. Emeka Stanley, a former Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly and a former member of the House of Representatives. This development marks a significant boost for the APC in Abia State, as the party continues to strengthen its foothold in the Southeast.
