The House of Representatives has announced plans to present a total of N704.91 million to President Bola Tinubu on December 31, 2024, to support vulnerable Nigerians affected by the removal of the petrol subsidy. The funds represent half-year salaries of the lawmakers, which they committed to donating in July to address hunger and alleviate the impact of the policy.
The initiative, led by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, aims to mitigate the widespread suffering and reduce tensions. Kalu had moved a motion in July, urging lawmakers to sacrifice half of their salaries for six months to address the nation’s challenges. “This government is doing its best, but one year is not enough to resolve the issues facing the country,” Kalu said.
Speaker Tajudeen Abba reminded members of their earlier decision, noting that N704,907,578.82 has been raised so far. On December 31, Abba will lead a delegation to hand over the funds to the President for the exclusive benefit of Nigerians in need.
