Emeka Umeagbalasi, Chairman of the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety), was attacked by gunmen claiming to work for detained Finland-based Biafran agitator Simon Ekpa. The attackers made off with Umeagbalasi’s Mitsubishi Hilux car, containing valuable items, after ambushing his driver, Comrade Chike Umeh, on November 27.
The first attack occurred at 4:30 pm along a bush path near the Umunze-Ihite Army checkpoint in Anambra State. The driver was assisted by soldiers, and the matter was reported to the Ajali Police Division.
Seven days later, on December 5, the car was snatched again, this time with Umeagbalasi’s wife, son, house-girl, and driver inside. The gunmen abducted other vehicle occupants, made off with valuables, and sped away amid gunfire and “Biafra or Nothing” chants.
The Anambra State Police Command recovered the stolen vehicle and issued a statement on December 7, 2024, confirming the recovery. The Intersociety and its lawyers have written to the Police Commissioner, seeking the release of the vehicle and domestic items.
The incident highlights growing concerns about insecurity and violence in the region.
