The Senate has instructed Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike to stop further demolitions of structures in Abuja unless authorized by a court of competent jurisdiction.
This directive follows growing criticism of Wike over the recent demolition of several structures in the FCT, which has sparked public outrage.
The Senate’s decision halts all demolition activities until an ad hoc committee, led by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and comprising seven additional members, reviews the legitimacy of these actions and concludes its investigation.
The move is aimed at addressing concerns about potential injustices and ensuring due process is followed in urban planning matters.
The committee’s findings are expected to determine the next course of action regarding demolitions in the FCT.
