The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has made significant recommendations in its 524-page review report of the 2023 General Elections. According to INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the report supports diaspora voting, allowing Nigerians living abroad to participate in the country’s electoral process.
The report also recommends early or special voting for journalists, security personnel, and other Nigerians who are unable to vote due to their roles during elections. This move aims to increase voter participation and ensure that all eligible citizens can exercise their right to vote.
Additionally, the report suggests the unbundling of the Commission, establishing an electoral offences tribunal, and creating a separate agency to handle the registration and regulation of political parties.
To improve voter access, INEC plans to develop protocols for cleaning up the voters’ register in collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the National Population Commission (NPC). The Commission will also focus on advocacy for affirmative action, voter education, and public communication to combat fake news and misinformation.
The recommendations are a significant step towards improving Nigeria’s electoral process and increasing voter participation. As INEC continues to work towards implementing these changes, Nigerians can look forward to a more inclusive and transparent electoral process.
