Edo APC Chairman: Okpebholo Struggles with Figures and Can’t Steal

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Jarrett Tenebe, has come to the defense of Governor Monday Okpebholo following a widely publicized stumble during the presentation of the state’s 2025 budget proposal. The incident, which occurred during Tuesday’s legislative session, saw the governor falter while reading figures from the N605 billion appropriation bill, a 25% increase from the 2024 budget.

Governor Okpebholo began his address with enthusiasm but struggled to articulate the numbers accurately, stating: “The Edo State Appropriation Bill of six billion… 605 billion… 76 million…” His voice wavered, and after several attempts to correct himself, he candidly admitted, “Sorry, it’s confusing me.” The moment elicited laughter and murmurs from the lawmakers present, and clips of the incident quickly circulated online, drawing widespread reactions.

In a video response aimed at countering the ensuing criticism, Tenebe dismissed the uproar and offered a spirited defense of the governor. According to the APC chairman, the governor’s difficulty with the figures was not a reflection of incompetence but rather evidence of his honesty and integrity.

“Social media has been abuzz with the governor’s budget presentation and the mix-up on N605 billion. It’s a common mistake—anyone can make such errors,” Tenebe said, brushing aside the mockery. He attributed the stumble to the governor’s lack of familiarity with financial manipulation, a trait he suggested distinguishes Governor Okpebholo from others in similar positions.

“Monday Okpebholo is not a thief and isn’t accustomed to figures. His innocence and honesty are what make him unique,” Tenebe continued. “Those criticizing him are merely making baseless noise. This isn’t about mistakes; it’s about a leader who is genuine and dedicated to serving the people of Edo State.”

Tenebe further lauded the governor’s performance since assuming office, emphasizing his developmental strides and commitment to governance. “Governor Okpebholo has consistently delivered on his mandate, and he will continue to do so. Anyone unhappy with his leadership can say whatever they want—it doesn’t change the fact that he is performing exceptionally,” Tenebe asserted.

In a pointed remark aimed at detractors, the APC chairman declared, “He is the governor of Edo State, and he is doing a great job. If you don’t like his face, you can go to hell and burn to ashes. Period!”

The chairman’s unfiltered comments have sparked mixed reactions across various platforms. While some supporters praised Tenebe for standing by the governor, others questioned the appropriateness of excusing the public mishap, particularly during an official budget presentation.

The incident has also reignited discussions about public accountability and the need for political officeholders to exhibit competence and clarity in official functions. Critics argue that while human error is understandable, such lapses may affect public confidence, especially during high-stakes engagements like budget proposals.

Despite the controversy, the APC leadership remains steadfast in its support of Governor Okpebholo. Tenebe’s defense underscores the party’s commitment to highlighting the governor’s achievements rather than dwelling on what he referred to as a “minor misstep.”

As Edo State looks ahead to 2025, the N605 billion budget proposal remains a critical topic of discussion. Whether the governor’s stumble overshadows the substance of the appropriation bill remains to be seen, but for now, Tenebe’s loyalty and defense have ensured that the conversation continues to center on Governor Okpebholo’s integrity and performance.
