The Ministry of the Interior of Ghana has announced the immediate closure of all land borders to ensure the integrity of the upcoming December 7 General Elections. This temporary measure, which began immediately after the announcement, will remain in effect until 6 pm on Sunday, December 8, 2024 .
According to the Ministry, the decision is a crucial step to ensure a smooth and secure electoral process. In a press statement signed by the Minister for the Interior, Henry Quartey (MP) on Friday, the Ministry urged compliance from the public, stating that “The Ministry urges all citizens, and travellers to and from Ghana, to cooperate with State Security Agencies enforcing this directive”.
The directive applies to all individuals and organisations, with security agencies stationed at the borders to enforce the closure effectively. The Ministry’s decision underscores the importance of maintaining the credibility of the elections as Ghanaians prepare to cast their votes.
This move is part of a broader effort to maintain peace and stability during the electoral process. The closure will be enforced by State Security Agencies, and citizens and travelers are urged to cooperate with the authorities.
