American Vlogger Elliot Eastman Killed in Botched Kidnapping in the Philippines, Body Dumped at Sea

An American vlogger, Elliot Eastman, was tragically shot and killed during a botched kidnapping in the Philippines.

His body was dumped at sea after he reportedly died on the night of his abduction, which took place on October 17 in the impoverished town of Sibuco, Zamboanga del Norte. Eastman, 26, was shot in the leg while trying to resist a group of gunmen who posed as police officers. He succumbed to his injuries while being taken away by boat.

Lieutenant Colonel Ramoncelio Sawan, acting spokesman for the Police Regional Office (PRO) in Zamboanga Peninsula, confirmed the details of Eastman’s death during an investigation. Sawan stated that, “Sometime late October, during our investigation, we encountered one witness who claimed Eastman had been shot during the abduction.” He continued, “On their way to escape by sea, the abductors noticed that Elliot Eastman was already dead. They threw his body into the water.”

Initially, officials treated this testimony as speculation. However, a suspect involved in the abduction later confirmed the account, providing a crucial confession. Sawan added, “But then later on, sometime in November, we caught a suspect linked to the kidnapping. He himself confirmed what happened. He confirmed Elliot had been shot and that the man was dumped overboard.”

Eastman’s family was informed of the tragedy through the US Embassy. For weeks, authorities had hoped that Eastman might still be alive, leading an extensive search effort. Police clashes with armed kidnappers on the island of Mindanao revealed the dangerous conditions surrounding the case, though Eastman’s body had not been recovered, and the motive for the abduction remained unclear.

Eastman, a YouTuber, had been in the Philippines with his Muslim Filipina wife, Karisha Jala, when four armed men forcibly entered their home around 10 p.m. on October 17. The men, claiming to be police, shot Eastman in the leg when he attempted to resist. He was then taken away in a speedboat off the coast of Zamboanga del Norte, a notoriously crime-ridden region.

When police arrived around 11 p.m., they photographed the crime scene, where blood believed to be from Eastman’s gunshot wound was found smeared on vinyl flooring. They also discovered an empty M16 rifle cartridge, along with everyday items like a hat, handbag, and food.

Former Sibuco Mayor Norbideiri Edding suggested that the kidnappers may have targeted Eastman because they believed him to be a wealthy foreigner living with a local Muslim woman. Edding also claimed that Eastman had been facing financial troubles, having been scammed by a previous girlfriend he had planned to marry. Just weeks before his abduction, Eastman had shared his concerns about living in the area. On a Facebook livestream on September 22, he expressed, “As long as I’m here, my life is still at risk, you know… It’s not even just the Philippines. This area that I’m in is like the most dangerous area in the country, so it’s literally like the red zone.”
